The BG Football Society has been active since at least 1993 as a friendly association of like-minded students. By the turn of the millennium, they had joined competitive leagues in the local area.
In 2007, the BG Football Society started a ladies' team with a view to enter competitions in the Lincoln area. Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln is predominantly a female institution, yet has no competitive female sports teams. As Technical Director (2007-9), Marcus Elliott set up a ladies' team and provided coaching. The position of Ladies' Rep' on the club committee was inaugurated in 2008, providing a female presence permanently on the board.
In 2007, the Men's 1st team came 2nd in the Thursday 6-a-side football league held at nearby Yarborough School

On March 28, 2009, the BG Football Society hosted a charity 6-a-side football match, with teams invited from the student body of BG, staff, and the general public. Players played in 30-minute slots with rotating substitutes. The event was sponsored by the Sky Centre, Lincolnshire Co-operative Society and Select Education.
In the evening, Tom Green and Marcus Elliott hosted a charity auction. The auction included signed football shirts, football memorabilia, computer games, horse racing tickets, among others.
The event raised over £1000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the BG Foundation Fund.[2] Participants were asked to donate using Justgiving
The BG Football Society help host the annual Mo Willoughby Football Tournament with the Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln Alumni Office as part of the annual Homecoming weekend.
The tournament consists of various current students, past students, staff, and local teams. It is usually held on the Saturday of the first May Bank Holiday. The 2009 competition was 6-a-side and consisted of 10 teams, split in to 2 leagues, with a semi-final and then final. The 2009 winners were Shake'n'Bake - a student team.
The Mo Willoughby Memorial Football Tournament began in 2005 to commemorate the life and work of a much valued member of the catering staff at BG who died in 2004. Many of our graduates felt that she should be remembered, and so in 2005 the first tournament was created in her honour, and it has become more popular over the two years that it has been running. Proceeds of the tournament also go to RAG charities.[3]
